A machine tirelessly performs its work. Gears interlock, rollers turn, a motor keeps the rhythm. Everything seems to resemble a mechanical counter—yet numbers are nowhere to be found; Instead, we observe an ongoing choreography of empty segments.
Continuous Counter is both model and metaphor—a hybrid object between digital precision, physical presence, and mechanical fatigue. Inspired by a squeaking gas meter in the basement corridor of a public institution, the work points to the invisible infrastructures that shape our daily lives. Counters like this are found not only in deserted hallways, basements, and shafts but also in digital applications. They feed corporate databases, recommendation algorithms on web platforms, and applications for self-optimization.
In Continuous Counter, the process of counting itself takes center stage, detached from capitalist logics of value creation. The work alludes to omnipresent processes of quantification, to critical infrastructures — and to their political, ecological, and economic entanglements.
